Security System Decay: An Issue to be Considered

Entropic security decay is recognised as a risk that needs to be addressed across all security systems. Security system decay due to internal or external factors is inevitable however can be managed by the prudent security leader.

Entropic decay is defined as “a measure of disorder in a system and a process characterised with disintegration, running down, and becoming disordered” (Herman 1999:86).  This means within the context of a security system as entropy increases capability decreases as systems rely on order and cohesion.

To overcome risks associated with entropy security leaders need to understand the internal and external vulnerabilities that may or continue to arise through the process of system review.

Without a strategic and regular method for system review new threats and therefore system vulnerabilities will not be identified hence the eventual failing of the security system.
