Sectors in Security: Municipal Corporate Security

A recent study published in the ANZSOC Journal of Criminology reported that Municipal Corporate Security (MCS) operations continue to evolve locally and abroad. However, the actual work performed can vary compared to traditional police and private security roles.

The published article entitled “The right people to do the right job: legitimation work of Municipal Corporate Security personnel” argued little is known about this emerging role. Previous studies explored traditional policing roles and individual perceptions in comparison to contract and proprietary security personnel. However, there is an absence of evidence-based research into MCS. The study determined public police, contract and proprietary security perform quite distinct roles from their MCS counterparts, often with different motivations and accountability. The article is a worthwhile read to gain a greater insight into this rapidly evolving sector of security and is available through Sage Publishing http://online.sagepub.com
