School Security & Bomb Threats – A Need to Review

A series of recent bomb threats to schools has raised a relevant issue about emergency preparedness and the ability of schools to adequately respond to serious threats of violence.

Australian Standard 3745:2010 Planning for emergencies in facilities was developed to enhance the safety of people in facilities by providing a framework for emergency planning.

Key components of such an approach should include:

  1. an emergency plan
  2. duties of designated staff including an emergency control organisation
  3. provisions for occupants with a disability
  4. education and training
  5. guidance on how to determine the structure and size of an emergency control organisation.
