PSOs Soon to be Authorised for Emergency Activities

A Bill entitled Police and Emergency Legislation Amendment Bill 2020 is currently before the Victorian Parliament. Once passed, the law will enable PSOs to exercise legislative powers across Victoria in the case of an emergency.

According to the Minister, the law is necessary for community safety so PSOs are able to assist police to provide a policing presence in a designated area, and to deter crime and antisocial behaviour.

The Minister advises PSOs will be supervised by policeman exercising powers in an emergency.

This initiative is another example of innovation associated with a pleural policing public safety model.

It is anticipated the Bill will become law shortly through amendment to the Victoria Police Act 2013.
