Does Melbourne Need a NYPD SHIELD approach?

The NYPD established a SHIELD program after September 2001 to further minimise risks associated with terror and violence. The program is a two-way street in that the NYPD relies on information exchange between the public and private policing sectors i.e. private security.

The NYPD recognises that the private sector partners are uniquely qualified to assist NYPD personnel during counterterrorism deployments.  This is because security personnel know their buildings, locks and neighbourhoods from a different perspective to operational police.

The program can be viewed online through the NYPD.

In consideration of recent incidents in Melbourne, we believe it is time to consider at local SHIELD approach.
