ASIS Victoria Speaker Judge Hyman Gives Evidence to Royal Commission

Members will remember a May 2015 ASIS Victoria breakfast presentation on court security by Judge Eugene Hyman at Nab, Docklands. Amongst other things Judge Hyman is an expert on strategies associated with managing domestic violence across the criminal justice system. He actually founded the first domestic violence courts in the USA.

Recently Judge Hyman gave evidence to the Australian Royal Commission into Family Violence. His statement provides an excellent overview on strategies associated with the management of domestic violence from a USA perspective. He highlights the types of orders that might be prescribed through a court being emergency protection orders, civil restraining orders and criminal protection orders.

The various approaches adopted in the USA have degrees of success as explained within the evidence provided to the Commission.
