Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) – What Security Leaders Should Know

More commonly known as “drones” a recent report in the USA advises that the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) market is estimated to be USD $10.1B in 2015 and is expected to reach USD $14.9B by 2020. The use of UAVs in Australia is growing hence we need to understand their uses and implications for systems of security.

Although UAVs are commonly associated with defence operations, they can also be used in the commercial environment.  Within Australia organisations using UAVs in a commercial sense typically conduct asset inspections such as tall or inaccessible structures.  Another use is mapping and survey, or surveillance.

Technological advancements in UAVs coupled with increased commercial market demand for non-defence applications are factors expected to further drive the UAV market.

Security leaders may well consider the appropriateness and innovative use of UAVs within their specific environment.
