Safe Work Australia Report on Attitudes to Risk

Safe Work Australia recently released a report entitled "Attitudes toward risk taking and rule breaking in Australian workplaces." As many security risks are also safety risks, this report is important for security leaders and risk professionals alike.

Key findings of the report we:

  • Over 90% of employers and workers did not accept dangerous behaviour although workers tended to be more accepting of risk in the workplace
  • Under 50% of employers and workers disagreed they would never accept risk taking
  • Labourers were more accepting of risk taking and rule breaking as were employers in the transport, postal and warehousing industry

This report, when read fully makes it clear there remains high risk industry sectors accepting of risk, not merely high risk sectors through reported incidents.  This cultural acceptance needs to be considered in risk treatments i.e. education, training, management support, suitable inductions and the like.

The report is attached.
