Security of Business Premises - Risk Principles

Victoria Police advise that businesses adopting risk management principles can reduce crime against the business, staff and customers. The strategies introduced are often contingent on the type of business such as those trading overnight, handling cash, frequented by the young, etc. The location can also contribute to risk.

Basic tips that assist in minimising risk include:

  • ensure external areas are well illuminated;
  • promote natural surveillance that includes openness and an ability to connect eyes between the business and external areas;
  • improve security around the perimeter and at access/egress points;
  • consider if a ram raid attack is likely and install protective bollards, heavy planters and the like;
  • review the adequacy of intruder alarm technology;
  • use warning signs that include CCTV monitoring, intruder alarm fitted, no cash on premises, etc

Victoria Police offer a Do-It-Yourself Business Security Assessment form that is available from the Victoria Police website – www.police.vic.gov.au
